Late Qing Chinese Elm Altar / Console Table – Antique Hand Carved Side Table c.1880–1920

£37500

A beautiful antique Chinese elm altar / console table dating from the Late Qing to early Republic period, circa 1880–1920.

This elegant long table features a richly aged solid elm top above a hand carved apron decorated with flowing floral and scroll motifs, highlighted by traditional dark lacquered detailing. The slim proportions and clean lines are very much in keeping with classic Chinese scholar and altar furniture of the period.

Constructed using traditional mortise and tenon joinery, the table displays genuine age, honest wear and a wonderfully time-earned patina throughout. The underside reveals traditional hand-finished construction techniques and naturally aged timber surfaces consistent with late 19th to early 20th century Chinese furniture.

A highly versatile piece ideal for use as:

a console table
hallway table
sofa table
display stand
media console
or decorative altar table

The combination of warm elm tones, carved detail and simple architectural form allows it to work equally well in antique, rustic, wabi-sabi or contemporary interiors.

Condition is good antique condition overall with age-related wear, marks, surface variation and historic character consistent with age and use. Structurally sound and full of charm.

A genuinely decorative and usable antique with fantastic presence.
