Late 19th Century Central African Slit Drum (Ngoma) – Carved Single Log, Congo Basin

£65000

Late 19th century Central African slit drum (Ngoma), carved from a single solid hardwood trunk section.
Originating from the Congo Basin region, this substantial example measures approximately 102cm wide, 60cm high, and 31cm deep, weighing approximately 25kg.
The drum is hollowed internally and features a hand-carved slit opening across the top, with integrally carved suspension lug and irregular hand-bored hole. The surface shows consistent age-related drying cracks, oxidation and patina. Old crack stabilisation with metal strip and nails is present, likely an early field repair. Beaters are niave and possibly a later replacements, certainly not recent recent additions.
Carved from a dense indigenous hardwood, likely Iroko.
A powerful sculptural and ethnographic presence piece with genuine age and weight.
