A seriously impressive piece of inter-war English furniture, dating to around the 1930s, this exceptionally large solid mahogany double-kneehole desk measures a huge 246cm in length.
Originally designed as substantial office furniture, the desk has a wonderfully practical arrangement of drawers, the rear is fully panelled and finished, allowing the piece to stand freely within a room rather than being restricted to placement against a wall.
Although originally an office desk, its enormous scale and freestanding construction make it an unusually versatile piece for modern interiors. It could equally work beautifully as an oversized sideboard, console, library piece or statement storage unit, particularly in a larger dining or living space.
There is also an interesting little piece of history retained inside one of the drawers: an old receiving stamp reading "Received June 1951, Liverpool", together with the initials "E.M." and "R.H.E." — presumably relating to its subsequent institutional or office use.
A wonderfully substantial and increasingly unusual piece of furniture with plenty of presence, useful storage and a great deal more versatility than its original purpose might suggest.
Age related wear to be considered including surface scratches and minor loses as pictured, solid overall condition.
