Early 20th Century Venetian Revival Figure Torchère Lamp, Polychrome & Parcel Gilt

£1,25000

A striking early 20th century Venetian Revival torchère lamp, modelled as a standing figure holding an illuminated torch and raised upon an ornate architectural plinth.

Executed in carved wood and gesso with polychrome and parcel gilt decoration, the figure displays the theatrical elegance and associated with the Venetian Revival tradition. Beautifully modelled with a graceful twisting stance and flowing drapery, the lamp possesses a strong sculptural presence, functioning equally as a decorative furnishing object and source of atmospheric light.

The original finish has been sympathetically conserved, with historic wear and surface character preserved, whilst the lamp has been professionally rewired and fitted with a complementary gilt gallery and frosted flame shade in keeping with the spirit of the piece.

Likely Italian and dating from the early decades of the 20th century, the lamp reflects the grand decorative interiors of the period, where sculptural torchères were employed to bring drama, warmth and a sense of theatre to salons, hotels and reception rooms.

An exceptionally decorative statement piece with remarkable presence, equally suited to traditional and eclectic interiors.

The combination of carved wood, gesso and original polychrome decoration creates a richness of surface and sculptural depth rarely found in later reproductions.

Age related wear/patina including minor loses. New parts: wiring, inline footswitch, bulb holder, Shade, Gallery.
