Antique Japanese Meiji Period Folding Scholar’s Desk – Carved Keyaki Wood Scribe Table c.1890

£54500

A small antique Japanese folding scholar’s desk dating to the late Meiji period, circa 1890.

Carved in hardwood, likely keyaki (Japanese elm), the desk features deeply carved decorative panels with flowing dragon and foliate motifs surrounding a central writing surface. The upper frieze incorporates two small drawers, originally intended for brushes, ink blocks and other writing implements.

Designed for use on tatami flooring, the desk sits low to the ground and folds neatly flat. The sides and rear panel are hinged, forming the legs when opened and allowing the piece to collapse for storage or transport.

The central writing surface shows historic ink staining and wear consistent with age and use, adding character and authenticity.

A decorative and functional piece of late 19th century Japanese furniture.

Please expect age related wear and areas of light damage, including ink stains, light signs of historic woodworm all of which has been thoroughly treated as a standard precaution. Also a small breakage to the back panel hinge area as pictured.
