An original mid-century industrial double-sided cloakroom bench manufactured by Cloakroom Equipment Ltd. of Station Street, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, retaining its original maker's plaque and numbered coat hooks.
Dating to around the 1950s, this substantial piece would originally have been fitted in a school, factory or works changing room, designed to withstand decades of daily use. Constructed from heavy tubular steel with welded mesh panels, hardwood seating slats and numbered cast coat hooks, it has all the honest utility and practical design that defines post-war British industrial furniture.
The frame has recently been stripped back to remove failing paint before being repainted in a soft heritage green, while the timber has been cleaned and preserved to retain its natural character and signs of age. The result is a piece that feels refreshed without losing the qualities that make it so appealing.
At an impressive 260cm in length, it works equally well as a hallway bench, retail display, restaurant seating or statement piece in a contemporary interior.
A genuine piece of British industrial history with plenty of character and increasingly difficult to find in this condition.
